Although it's hard to believe, the current console generation started almost 4 years ago. More and more companies are putting all their efforts into PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5, but there are also video games that are still being released for the less powerful hardware of Microsoft and Sony. What path will XDefiant take?
The multiplayer free-to-play has been in the works for quite some time, as we first saw it in action in 2021. After multiple delays and controversies, it will finally be available by the end of May 2024. The preseason will last 6 weeks and will introduce a lot of content while preparing the ground for what's to come in the following months.
In the announcement, Ubisoft revealed that this new competitive proposal will be available for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. The lack of news about ports for the previous generation consoles worried the community, and we finally know if the online title will or will not arrive on those platforms.
XDefiant won't be available for Xbox One and PS4, Ubisoft confirms
In July 2023, the development studio revealed that XDefiant will be available for PC and current-gen consoles but stated that they would also work on versions for PS4 and Xbox One. Information was scarce, and it was only known that these ports would arrive later.
However, the community's hope dwindled with the recent announcement of the release date. The thing is, there was a change of plans, and the versions for the previous generation consoles from Microsoft and Sony have been definitively canceled. Ubisoft indicated this in response to a fan's inquiry about the PS4 version of the free-to-play.
Without providing much information, the company mentions that they wanted to deliver the best possible quality, so they decided to focus all their efforts on the ports for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
"Thank you for the question! We wanted to maintain a consistent standard of quality for the game, so we made the decision to focus solely on the current generation consoles. We appreciate your understanding!" reads a post from the official XDefiant account.
While this news may be disappointing for many, it was somewhat expected. Despite the game hosting multiple testing sessions over the past year, none were available for older consoles. Will the exclusivity with PC and current-gen platforms affect its commercial performance? It's hard to say, but in the closed Betas, they gathered over a million players, which bodes well for its future.
