Yuzu subreddit stopped working after leaks and distribution of illegal copies of Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was not only a sales success for Nintendo, but had a very positive side effect for the Japanese company, as it helped in its efforts against emulation and piracy by causing the dispersion of a very important community.

Before The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom debuted, there were strong leaks that came to light thanks to the NewYuzuPiracy subreddit, a community focused on Yuzu. In case you don't know, Yuzu is one of the main emulation software that certain players use to play Nintendo Switch titles they own on their PC. However, there are other users who opt for the illegal path and play copies they do not purchase, but rather download online.

The Legend of Zelda put an end to emulation and piracy community

NewYuzuPiracy had been operating for more than 3 years, but after the leaks of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the subreddit grew so much that it went from 37,000 members at the beginning of May to almost 70,000 members before its closure on June 13, according to PC Gamer.

After the leaks, users began to take advantage of the subreddit to share links to illegal game downloads, as well as files, mods and even tips to improve the game's performance on PC, and there was more traffic, which apparently caught the attention of the general public and reddit, which decided to close the community, which honestly was already expected.

Subreddit members saw it coming and referred to it as a matter of time. It is important to say that this is not the first time something similar has happened. In fact, NewYuzuPiracy was a group that formed after reddit closed the original yuzupiracy subreddit.

It is unknown if Nintendo was involved in this case and decided to take action after the leaks (something they have done before) or if reddit acted on its own after seeing the growth and actions on the subreddit. What is clear is that the leaks of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom drew attention, so it can be said that thanks to this game, one of the main piracy communities of Nintendo Switch was shut down.
