A recent update implemented biomes in Pokémon GO, which offers encounters with species based on their habitat. Niantic seized this new feature to add Wiglett, a Pokémon similar to Diglett but unique, to the game.

Fans are creating fake beaches in Pokémon GO because of Wiglett
Just as it is exclusive to the beaches of Paldea (Pokémon Scarlet & Violet), Wiglett can only be found in Pokémon GO on real-world beaches. However, some players are altering the game maps to obtain it without being on a real beach, as reported by 404 Media.
Pokémon GO operates thanks to the maps of OpenStreetMap, which is open-source and gathers geographical information from around the world that anyone can edit.
Thus, Pokémon GO players who want to catch Wiglett but can't be on a beach have taken advantage of this tool to generate virtual beaches on the map near their location so that Pokémon GO, believing they are real beaches, offers encounters in these fake beaches.
Naturally, these edits are not welcome in the OpenStreetMap community; instead, they have been more of a headache, as the people in charge of maintaining this tool have had to pay attention to the creation of these fake beaches to identify the changes and revert them.
