Subscription services have gained significant traction over the past few years, providing an accessible and affordable way to enjoy a wide range of video games. Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus currently dominate the market, but it might only be a matter of time before more competitors emerge.
We bring this up because SEGA recently expressed interest in creating a similar service—a kind of Netflix for video games. This was confirmed by Shuji Utsumi, the company’s president, during a recent interview where he discussed the idea.
SEGA has a vast legacy in the gaming industry, making the idea of a subscription service with an attractive catalog highly feasible. Such a service would undoubtedly catch the attention of fans of the brand and its popular franchises.
SEGA aims to create its own Game Pass in the future
During a conversation with BBC, Utsumi stated that services like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus are very appealing to SEGA. He also hinted that the company is working on a project to compete with Microsoft and Sony in this sector.
"We're thinking something - and discussing something - we cannot disclose right now.”
Unfortunately, Utsumi didn’t provide further details, leaving the potential subscription service as a mystery. SEGA has already brought many significant games from its studios to Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus, being one of the strongest supporters of Microsoft’s initiative.
The idea of a subscription service exclusively featuring SEGA games is undoubtedly exciting for fans. The company boasts a rich catalog of classic and modern titles, which could form a library many would gladly pay a monthly fee for.
That said, nothing is set in stone for now, and it remains unclear whether SEGA’s project will come to fruition. Should it be confirmed in the future, we’ll have to wait for details about its launch, game library, and, of course, pricing.
What games could SEGA include in its subscription service?
As mentioned earlier, SEGA is one of the most iconic developers in the industry, holding a wealth of renowned franchises. Many of these could return with new projects after years of inactivity.
One of the main attractions would undoubtedly be the multiple entries in Sonic the Hedgehog, the company’s most popular franchise. Fans of retro games could enjoy classic and future titles from series like Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter, Crazy Taxi, and more.
Additionally, SEGA owns studios like ATLUS and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, known for franchises such as Shin Megami Tensei, Persona, Like a Dragon, and others. After acquiring Rovio in 2023, SEGA also became the owner of Angry Birds.
